Adding Shell Access for a User

In some circumstances, you may want to grant shell access privileges to a user. This howto demonstrates how you can enable shell access in the web-based configuration's User Manager.

A user with shell access will have access to the underlying operating system. As a security precaution, access should only be enabled for trusted users who have a real requirement.

Enable Shell Access

ClearOS 6

This feature is now available through the web interface in ClearOS 6:

  • Install the Shell Extension from the Marketplace.
  • Go to <navigation>System|Accounts|Users</navigation> in the menu

When you go to edit or add a user, you will see an option to select which shell is available.

ClearOS 5

In the /etc/system/webconfig file, add or update the following parameter:

allow_shell = 1
