Answer 1
It could mean that due to her being Mexican there were certain beliefs and stigmas to her culture that made her reluctant to do whatever was asked of her by the teachers.
I’m unsure if it’s right or even helpful but I decided to try to help you out.
Answer 2

By the statement "Martha is Mexican", Mr. Boone meant to say that Martha's background is not satisfactory to be given the scholarship jacket despite her deserving grades.

The short story "The Scholarship Jacket" is about a young Mexican American girl and the injustice she was subjected to because of her background. The story deals with themes of discrimination, honesty, fairness, perseverance, right, and wrong, etc.

Martha was a straight-A student and confidently expected to get the scholarship jacket. But when she overheard her teachers Mr. Schmidt and Mr. Boone argue about the same, she was distraught. Mr. Boone had even spoken out "Martha is Mexican" seemingly to refer to her background as a Mexican immigrant as a detriment to her 'eligibility' to the jacket. Mr. Schmidt knows and supports Martha's right to get the jacket like she rightly deserved to get it. But the other teachers seemed to not really support the jacket being given to someone who's 'not American' and wanted it to be given to Joann.

This seemingly discrimination against Martha is a result of her being "Mexican". And it was this issue that led to the 'debate' of whether to give the jacket to Martha or Joann whose "father is not only on the board, [but also] owns the only store in town." Thus, Mr. Boone meant to say that Martha's position as an immigrant, a Mexican, is an obstacle to her 'eligibility' to be given the scholarship jacket.

How does this scene set the tone of the book? Fire from the Rock

Answers

The tone of Lord of the Flies is fairly aloof, creating a sense of removal from the events. The boys on the island generally treat each other with a lack of sympathy, and, similarly, the overall tone of the book expresses neither shock nor sympathy toward what happens. Events such as the deaths of Simon and Piggy are related in matter-of-fact detail: “Piggy fell forty feet and landed on his back across the square red rock in the sea. His head opened, and stuff came out and turned red.” The tone here is resigned, expressing no surprise at the violent death of one of the main characters. The sense is that the deaths are as inevitable as the tide: “Then the sea breathed again in a long, slow sigh, the water boiled white and pink over the rock; and when it went, sucking back again, the body of Piggy was gone.” By focusing on the natural world in the immediate aftermath of the death, instead of the boys, Golding distances the reader from the emotion of the scene, but his precise details about what Piggy’s broken body looks like impart a sense of horror and disgust.

Throughout the novel, Golding’s tone suggests the island itself is as responsible for what happens as the boys. Golding’s tone when describing nature is anxious and distrustful. He personifies nature as a violent, vengeful force. The heat becomes “a blow that (the boys) ducked.” The trees rub together “with an evil speaking.” The tide is a “sleeping leviathan” and the sea boils “with a roar.” Clouds “squeezed, produced moment by moment this close, tormenting heat.” Evening comes, “not with calm beauty but with the threat of violence.” The boys are presented as almost as vulnerable to the forces of nature as to each other, sustaining the tone of justified fear. Nature is a destructive force that elicits the boys’ most savage natures. Their growing discomfort and unease with the effects of nature, as expressed by Ralph’s disgust at his filthy clothes, overgrown hair, and unbrushed teeth, heighten the tone of anxiety.

Do you agree with Atticus when he continues to defend Mr. Cunningham? Why or why not?

Answers

Answer:

Explanation:

Mr. Cunningham, a hard-working man who struggles each day to feed his family without using government assistance, typically leads a good life.  However, he is one of the men that shows up at the jail, with violent intents towards Tom Robinson.  He is one of many men from the town, who, if you see them in their everyday lives, seem normal, kind and decent.  They are upstanding citizens.  The "blind spots" that Atticus refers to is the fact that Mr. Cunningham, like many of the men with him, is blind to the fact that black people are their equals.  They are racist, and their racism makes them blind to any sort of rational thought when it comes to black people.  The blind spots that Mr. Cunningham has, leads him to the jail, to enact violence upon an innocent black man, just because he is black.  Cunningham would never do this to a white man--he is blind to white man's cruelty, and overly sensitive to any possible scandal involving a black man.  So, these men, who live normal lives of decency, turn into irrational violent men when it comes to race.

Atticus is different because he does not have these blind spots--he tends to see people based upon the "content of their characters," not upon the color of their skins, or the social circles that they fit into.  He knows Tom is innocent, and so will protect and defend him--it doesn't matter if he's black.  His blackness does not factor into the equation, whereas for the mob that shows up at the jail, the fact that Tom is black is the ONLY factor in the equation.  I hope that those thoughts help--good luck
