The Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Protocol, or WPAD, helps a web browser or other applications automatically detect the location of a PAC file using DNS or DHCP. The browser can then configure itself to use the Web Proxy.
WPAD can use either DNS or DHCP or both to help the browser discover the location of the PAC file. A browser that supports both DHCP and DNS will first attempt to locate a PAC file using DHCP and, if it fails, it will then try DNS. DNS WPAD is the most widely supported method, with support across all major browsers and operating systems.
